An unusual pose, a bit different to the norm
Looks like an emperor to me but there are probably so many different variations that it may not be, um, not much help am I?
Well done.
Geoff.

Hi Barrie nice image.
After checking the books when we got back I longer think it is a Emperor I'm pretty certain it's a female Southern Hawker Aeshna cyanea. It's a nice pose and a bit different, very attractive perch .

Well caught . Its actually a Southern Hawker laying eggs. They lay the eggs in moss and in soil etc at the side of the pond. Yours is in the process of making an incision in the moss or whatever with her ovipositor before she deposits the eggs. Thts why the body is curved under the pressure.

Excellent capture of dragonfly behaviour. Very nice to see.

It's a good behavior shot of a super looking dragon, I'd like to see the DF just a little higher in the frame, personal taste thing and no big deal Barrie.

JR is absolutely right with ID and behaviour. I got these at a local reserve last year doing the same thing. Unfortunately there are none there so far this year.
