According to Hunt's Camera in Arthur Morris's latest newsletter, Canon will offer a $300 mail-in rebate on the 5D starting 4/1. If you are planning to buy one soon, it might be worth it to wait 1-1/2 weeks.

Just a heads-up in case the info is correct.

Hi Harley,
I think that your info is correct - the AM newsletter is a reliable source, and that rebate has been rumored for some weeks.

The current price of the 5D is $ 2895, and with the rebate it goes 2595...pretty good :-)

I'm trying to figure out what it means. Are the 5D sales not living up to expectations?

Good question, Guy. The rebate policies make me scratch my head. Canon will rebate lenses that seem to be selling well and are not slated for replacement. Maybe it has something to do with management sales goals here or in Japan. Not sure what else makes sense. The 5d seems to be well received by reviewers and users, and based on photos posted here and elsewhere, it is selling well. At its price point, it is a great deal for a full frame camera. Who knows?

My guess is the D200 vs. 5D comparison. The 5D is a lot more camera but still might not justify the substantial price difference between the two (the 5D being almost twice the price). Canon seems to be as competitive as ever with Nikon. I haven't heard anything that would suggest poor sales though. Canon's digitals often seem to drop 10-20% six months after introduction, after that first flurry of sales is over and all the stores are well stocked. Were there not similar, slight price reductions (though not rebates) for the 20D ($1499 down to $1299) and 10D?
