Hi everyone,

Has anybody done any research or have any strong opinions on what the best background colour for a photographic website is?

I am just about to start designing a website (and have a headache already!) and have been looking at lots of photographers websites. They vary from white to black with everything in between (inc. some very nice pastel colours).

Any thoughts?

Many thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

I prefer an 18% grey background, to me it seems most natural.

I have always thought this website to be very appealing colour wise.www.nordicbirds.com/page2.htm

It is a very difficult one, I had my web site revamped a couple of months ago and went thru a variety of colours before deciding to stay with black,Browse as many web sites as you can for ideas,Its like buying a tie a very personal thing

Another vote for black - tried loads of others and didn't like the results. I think the glare from a light screen surrounding an image makes viewing them more difficult but hey what do I know!!!

Personally I think white is best. Followed closely by black or grey. The problem (IMO) with any coloured background, is that the colour may not suit every image on the site, and you may get some pretty horrendous colour clashes. With black, grey and especially white backgrounds, they suit pretty much everything.

I think white has a cleaner, simpler look too, which is something that I prefer.
