64 or 32?

This is kindof a roundabout query. I have a new computer with windows 7 64 bit, PSCS4 (which I already had on my old). Attached I have a Nikon 4000 scanner. I already new there was no supported nikon scan update for win7 so I purchased Vuescan. After a few hours of using, I am not really impressed and want my old nikon scan back. The last Nikon scan 4 was for winvista 32 bit. I went ahead and downloaded and it will not recognize my scanner. If i ran PSCS4 as 32 bit, would Nikon scan work? If so, how do I run PSCS4 as 32 bit?

I'd suggest working with VueScan a bit more. it's interface is a little confusing, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty good. Another alternative is Silverfast AI or AI Studio.

You could install a 32 bit virtual machine and install Vista 32 and Nikon Scan on it. You would then be able to use PS in 64 bit mode which will allow better utilization of RAM.

Still another alternative is if you have an older machine or laptop with a 32 bit OS, install Nikon Scan on it and use that machime for scanning.

If you ran PS in 32 bit mode, I doubt Nikon Scan would work because it uses (I believe) a 32 bit TWAIN driver. The OS would still balk, think.

You could try going to the MS website and look at available approved drivers for scanners. Their may be a generic that will work. I don't think it is going to work with the Vista driver. Windose is weird that way. You could also check with Nikon to see when they will have a compatible driver for Win 7. There are a lot of photographers that scan and they will need to updates very soon.

Mark,
Try the following work around [http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/44994-getting-your-nikon-coolscan-work-w7-x64.html] My OS is Windows 7 64bt and I have the Nikon Coolscan 4000 scanner. You use it in conjunction with vuescan. Follow the directions you will have no problem. Nikon is not planning to update the drivers. Happy scanning.

It already runs in 32 bit as there is no 64 bit version of CS4 available.

John - that was only true for the Mac version. The Windows version of CS4 is 64-bit. When you install PS CS4, the default is to install both the 64-bit and 32-bit version on a 64-bit system.

You're right, David...my mistake. Sorry 'bout that.

Thanks, David, for your response. Just for future reference, how do you choose which version to run? I'm assuming the 64 bit version is the default, or did I choose 64 bit in installation and can't remember?

I believe 64-bit is the default. You probably have icons in the start menu folder for both. If you want to check - or need to recreate some shortcuts - the 32-bit version will be installed in "C:\Program Files\" and the 64-bit in "C:\Program Files (x86)\" assuming you just did the default install.
