I grew up in western Iowa and have long had a fascination with prairies - I enjoy the quiet, the simplicity and the hidden complexity of prairies.
This past Sunday, I went out for a portrait session at the UW-Arboretum. While scouting and waiting for the client to arrive, I did some fun shooting for me of some Big Blue Stem (Andropogon gerardii) seed heads, which is probably my favorite grass.
Pentax K20D, 70mm lens; f/11; 1/250"; and a little PP in LR...
Nice shot. The world is full of interesting grass.

I really like the lighting in this , Tim. Was this pp, filters, a cloud?

Hi Bruce,
Yes, no, yes. ;)
It was a partly cloudy morning when I took the photograph, and no filters. My camera's meter was primarily shooting for the lights, so I knew that I'd have to work it up in PP. In PP in LR, I worked with curves to darken the lights, which created more texture in the clouds, and also lightened the darks, to bring out some detail in the seed head. Finally, I seem to recall adding is some saturation to help everything pop a bit more, and then a vignette, to focus the eye on the seed head...

I like your processing on this one. The way the light behind it is glowing gives it an interesting touch

Simple. Neat look to it.

Nice job on this one. You inspired me to go out at shoot some blue stem but I got distracted when a giant swallowtail came along.
An extremely artful image. I might be inclined to clone out the small stalk to the left of the main bunch, but that's extremely minor. Very nicely executed.
