I'm heading to Colorado on Sept. 25th from Vancouver WA and will be shooting til the following Sat. or Sun., maybe longer. I don't have a strict itinary. I do want to shoot some of the probably iconic spots, mostly cause I don't know the area to well. But, if anyone wants to hook up and do some shooting...let me know. Maybe some insight from some locals to get to the good, lesser known spots...?

Also, camping...? How strict is it? Can I just pull over and sleep in the truck? Are permits required, if so...where to attain them, etc... Thanks for any help here.

Campsites have never been a problem and are free. Where are you headed? I'll be out that weekend and the weekend after (+/- a Friday). If you follow the fall color report thread you'll realize that ALL of us will be out there during that time frame and usually we stumble upon familiar faces at sunset/rise. Last year there was some car marking ribbon thing, not sure if we're doing that this year... I drive a 2000 maroon 4Runner and will have two dogs (B/W Border Collie and a 4 month old german shepherd) with me so say hi if you spot me :wavey:

Edit: What I forgot to mention, nobody really has a solid plan of where they'll be at a specific time. A lot depends on weather and color conditions. So it's hard to make plans yet. I usually don't know where I'm going until I hit the highway and need to figure out where I'm sleeping that night. Now how's that for vague

I'm leaving Sat the 25th, and probably won't be shooting really til Sun. night. Not sure about where I'll be unless I hook up with someone who has a good plan of attack. Just gonna fake it til I make it. I am going to try and hit some of these spots here though to start off. I've never been down that way so I'm pretty open for the adventure of it.

I drive a blue 2004 Dodge Dakota with a matching camper shell.

You've found a good advice to follow, Darren is a great source and his website pretty much spells it out. Good luck and see you out there.

Campsites have never been a problem and are free.

Not true! Camping on US Forest land (dispersed camping) is free, and you can just pull off anywhere you feel safe and sleep in your truck, as I always do. But campsites in USFS campgrounds are not free, there's a nightly fee. Some even require more if there's more than one vehicle. Who would want to car camp in a noisy campground surrounded by trailers, generators, children, barking dogs, etc., anyway? I generally find a spot with no one anywhere near, specifically so I can drift off to sleep with my stereo turned up to skin-peeling level. So if it's midnight, and you feel the ground shaking, and as you get closer you hear the muffled sounds of Porcupine Tree or Opeth or Rush leaking through the sheet metal of a dark gray Nissan Frontier, you'll know it's me.
