Maroon Bells - Lens Recommendations

Just wondered if the group might offer some thoughts on photographing Maroon Bells. I'll be shooting with a 5d2. The lens I normally use is the 24-105mm.

I know this is subjective, but will the 24 be wide enough, or if it were you - would you prefer to have a 16-35 or 17-40mm lens?

Appreciate your thoughts.

David.

Personally, i think wide can be really useful for the Bells. Not to say 24 mm isnt adequate--you can get plenty of great shots at that length (at least at maroon lake--at crater lake super wide is essential)

Glancing back over some of my past photos at the Bells, I see that most of my favorites have used focal lengths equivalent to 24mm or longer (on a full frame sensor). This is not to say that wider won't also give you some nice images, but most of what I'd consider to be the classic views of this spot should be able to be done with your 24-105, at least in my personal opinion.

24mm if you want to include the other 53 photographers along lakes edge...40mm if you only want 2 or 3!

Hmmm, Jack has it been awhile since you've been there? 2 years ago when I was there, unfortunately on a Saturday, there were 78 photogs along the shore. And I don't think that is even a record.
David, I agree 24 is wide enough. I often use my 28-135.

You could also use the 24 to make 4-6 verticals and stitch them into a nice, big file. If you're shooting sunrise, be prepared for 2-3 stops difference between the light on the peaks and the shaded lake and lakeshore.

As others have mentioned, you don't need that wide of a lens for this place.

Very helpful information. Thank you very much! Sounds like I'll be rather happy with my 24-105mm.

I especially enjoyed Jack's reply.
