Saw a pair of these birds at the Bosque today. They didn't let me see them well or too long so only a few images cropped a bit. Looking through the book there are only 2 dark eyed thrashers and the Le Conte's looks much lighter in color. Neither bird looks like it would be spending time at the Bosque. Otherwise not an exciting bird day at Bosque but the corn is growing well this year.

Sally, looking at the combination of field marks and range maps, I think the most likely answer is that this is a Crissal Thrasher. An important (but largely absent from the field guides) piece of information is that juvenile Crissals have dark irises, which leads to them being called Le Contes and Californias with some regularity. This has the strongly curved bill of a Crissal, and the overall coloration is consistent. With the exception of Brown Thrasher, thrashers show little to no pattern of vagrancy, so that is another strong reason to start with the expected species and work from there.

My impression was Crissal Thrasher as well.

Thanks for your responses, Brian and Nate. My first inclination was Crissal (which is still a new bird for me) but Sibley's has no mention that young birds have dark eyes which led me to the wrong conclusion that it could be a California Thrasher. I don't trust where birds are supposed to be found any more since I discovered a sungrebe at the Bosque back in '08. I have learned that birds sometimes don't know where they are supposed to be.

Sally, I've not seen that field mark published anywhere, but learned it from an outstanding AZ birder who knows his stuff and has lots of field experience with young thrashers. I sort of stumbled across it as I was trying to make sense of some old (and mistaken for the same reason) records that had Le Conte's Thrashers here in the park. Had no idea it was you who found the sungrebe--belated congrats--I wish I'd seen it.
