Don't know what the fall color situation is, but I had good results the last week of September several years ago. The main thing, of course, is to go on a clear (or mostly clear) day, or you'll probably be lost in the fog. The classic Shuksan-reflected-in-Picture-Lake shot has the best light in mid-late afternoon.

Hi Tim, the North Cascades are full of limitless possibilities. Going after the classic Shuksan reflection will take you up the North Fork Nooksack River valley and the Mount Baker Highway. This is one of my favorite areas in all of Washington and I spend a lot of time exploring it.

I have a lot of blog posts about different trips in this area so here are a few direct links:

Hannigan Pass / Peak
Anderson Butte (south side of Mt Baker)
Miscellaneous NF Nooksack
Cougar Divide

Hope some of this might give you some ideas. Shoot me an email if you have any questions.

Good luck & enjoy!
Steve

My experience and information I've received from some other photographers concurs with what James posted above - last week in September is usually prime fall color, and in the afternoon (although not too late or the foreground lake will be in shadow).
