6 spot burnet
I took this shot of a 6 spot Burnet moth on Meadow Thistle out in the field next to my home one evening after work.
The lighting is just the warm evening sunlight.

I took this shot with the camera in portrait position but I'm uploading one taken in landscape format also to see which one the experts on here think is the best composition.

Sony A350
Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro
1/200th second
f8
ISO 200
-0.3 stop exposure compensation
Tripod

Was I right to choose the portrait version over this one?

Geoff.

The first one for me Geoffrey, I think both formats work, but I prefer the portrait crop.

Portrait if you want more emphasis on the moth, landscape for more amphasis on the thistles.
Both are excellent, however.

Think I'd go for the portrait too Geoff though I do think that both work well.

Both are nice. You are beginning to loose focus on the left attena and the stem it is sitting on. I prefer the first but would prefer a bit more dof maybe between f11-f16.
