Retrospect as backup software

Can someone give me a layman's description of how Retrospect (RS) works? I have two 300 Gb Maxtor OneTouch II drives and I use one as a backup for the other (the first contains physical data, the second has RS restore points). The latter drive (the RS backup drive) has a RS folder that exceeds 189 Gb! The first 300 Gb drive, which has a physical copy of my data, contains about 80 Gb. I was under the impression that RS made only incremental backups - that is only new data is backed up. Given the size of the RS folder, the software appears to make a compressed (?) backup of all the data everytime it runs (once a week).

I am confused and running out of drive space!

I thank you in advance for taking the time to help me.

Hmmmm that is weird Martin. Is there a duplicate backup file kicking around? Did you check to see that you have incremental selected in the settings? I use Retrospect as well but I use the duplicate feature set to incremental. I select the folders I want backed up and if any have changed it also changes the backup. Pretty slick.
