Once Underfoot
This spring was my coming out as a wildflower photographer. Once underfoot now they were in front of my lens the main subject in an image. Extremely challenging, especially those which are only in full bloom in full sun. This image was taken between Olancha and Coso just off 395. For about a mile each side of 395 was full of Desert Mariposa.
I spent the better part of an early afternoon finding the best subjects I could. There is definitely a different technique in flower photography larger apertures and higher shutter speeds. Olympus E-500 f3.8 ISO 100 1/1000. Just wondering how you guys felt about flowers versus Vistas. Don't get me wrong I still love the Grand Vista "wow" image.

Paul, I'm sure most would comment with regard to flowers vs vistas overall. To be honest I have no real preferences over the long haul as long as resulting good quality is there. Especially in my own work. With that said I've personally had a mixed bag with results on close-ups such as this image. I think the key in most cases is a good control and spread of the DOF overall. To me this looks to be about as good as it gets for general clarity and DOF or focus spread. I actually do not feel that the direct light on display here is too strong and the image seems to work very nicely as is.

Paul,

Nice little cluster you found "under foot." The challenge with flower photography now becomes how well you can operate and capture images from your belly!

Me, not so much.
