Hi Guys,

There have been some great ptarmigan images from Danny Green last month so I thought I should post my efforets from earlier this year. Taken in Perthshire on a very cold day whilst lying in the snow. This small pack of ptarmigan were very accepting following a very slow approach.

Canon 300mm f/4, 1.4TC, Fuji sensia 100

Comments welcomed

Hi Niall
The light looks nice and soft and you have managed to keep detail in the feathers,The bird in the background shows how well their camo works, :toast:

"The bird in the background shows how well their camo works"

What bird in the background?  Sorry, couldn't resist!

I like the composition very much. It does seem to have a brownish/magenta cast, but that could be my monitor.

Your efforts paid off well, Niall! Only wishing for a bit more uniform BG. :toast:

Hello Niall
I can't understand why this has only attracted 3 comments. I think it's a fine image of birds rarely seen, never mind photographed.
Best wishes

Certainly a species I bump into regularly, but carrying a camera and lens to where they are is not my idea of fun.
Well done on a lovely shot and also in getting your gear to them.

A lovely shot. I like how the background bird echoes the foreground one. Colour balance does seem slightly odd: probably partly the scan, and partly the warm lighting. I think the nearmost bird would benefit from a touch more sharpening, especially around the head/eye area.

Sounds like getting close to these can be quite an ordeal.Congrats on a good image.

Hello Niall

Looks like you got them in snow which was something I couldn't do because there was no snow. Photographing this Beautiful bird is very challenging because of its enviroment in which it lives, it certainly challenges your stamina carrying a bag full of camera equipement up on to the high tops. I like the way you have framed the two birds and you have acheived a stunning image Niall so well done. I was also going to comment on the low replies for such a nice image, so come on give credit where credits due.

Thanks for the comments guys, all much appreciated. I guess I have some work to do on my scanning technique - either that or calibrate my monitor!
