22 mile day hike.
Tuesday 09.14.10 ~ We decended 800 feet down into the canyon at dawn. 22 miles of climbing over boulders, bushwhacking, mud & quicksand. Made it out of the canyon as the setting sun was swallowed by the horizon. We finished the hike up on the canyon rim by moonlight. Wanted to get a shot of the Quail Panel. I was scuffed up and bloody.....but it was good.

My wife and I spent the whole day yesterday hiking together in the canyons. Neither one of us cried or fainted.......guess it was a successful hike.
I have always just seen straight shots of Big Man Panel....so I wanted to try something from another angle....had the camera in the dirt for this one.

Hey there Dirt Dog,
Great shots, especially the first. You are quickly becoming the "Picto Master".

Now it's about the hike. Do I understand you hiked 22 (twenty two) miles or was it .22 (point two two) miles?

I presume you were "Mazing" it, no?

Great seeing you posting again.

Best,

Jim

Thanks Jim ~
Yeah that was twenty-two miles (22) for the Quail Panel...then went again13 miles for Big Man Panel yesterday. Did these two within a week of each other. Not to bad for being almost 60 years old and a smoker. If I keep this up......you'll soon will be able to call me Dead Dirt Dawg instead of Red Dirt Dawg. But I know it is all the Buffalo Trace Bourbon I have in my Camelback that is keeping me alive on these hikes.

Extraordinary art well worth your efforts to find and capture.
I like your angled approach on these and the light is perfect.
How'd ya feel the day after?

Impressive rock art!

That's some tough country for a 22 mile hike, even for a non-smoker!

That is a wonderful panel of rock art and I like the shadowing effect giving it depth in the 1st one. Sounds like a challenging hike! Did you carry all your water or is there water available for filtering along the way?

Thanks Dan ~ I carried all my water....but my pack was twice as heavy as my hiking partner's pack. He only carried some water with him and by noon we were hunting for water. There was part of the hike where finding water was "iffy" He is a R.N. on the Navajo Reservation...so I figured he knew what he was doing. He carried a Steripen U.V light water purifier. I hadn't seen that used in the field before and was very impressed with it. Think I will be getting one as a backup soon.
Steripen Ultraviolet Water Purifier
This is the whole system with the bottle and not just the penlight~
SteriPEN Water Purifier System Pack
I think he said he also had two other water purification systems with him also.

22 miles!!?? Wow. Brutal.

I like the angles you've used... makes it seem a bit mysterious, like discovering them for the first time.

Great angles and light on these images, nice work.
