I just read a fabulous book by Ed Greenberg and Jack Reznicki (past PPA President). The title is Photographer's Survival Guide; A Legal Guide for Artists in theDigital Age. It covers four topics in great detail, copyright law, copyright registration, model and property releases, and contracts. The photography community is so full of misinformation and bad tribal knowledge on these subjects. This book quickly dispels all the false beliefs that circulate through the forums, including this one. It's short, filled with anecdotes and New York humor that liven an otherwise dry subject. Spend 20 bucks and educate yourself. The next time someone asks, "Do I need a model release for..." you will know the answer.
Ponder this... Why do photographers ask each other for legal advice?
PPA is a large outfit with the financial resources and personnel to do things on such a scale, and membership fees reflect it- $323+/year for full members and $194/year for "aspiring" members. Their programs and materials are top flight but the principal focus is portrait/wedding photography as a business, even as they're slowly branching out to other venues. I don't know of any other photo org that is so focused on the business side of things.
We've been members for over 20 years, and always felt we got our money's worth. Access to their insurance program has really paid off.
Pitch over. Get the book. As the others already said, it's a goodun.

Hank, PPA Studio Management Services has kept many of us out of the ditch. Their focus on the business of photography has been very helpful to us. When the benchmark survey came out in January we revised all of our prices to give us a 25% COS and suddenly the picture looks a little better. I haven't had to use the indemnity trust yet, but it's real comforting to know it's there. And... The last time I attended a class in Atlanta there was a stock photographer, a nature photographer, and an art photographer. They are beginning to diversify. Y'all join up now!
