I will be traveling to the San Juans this weekend and was curious where you could get some good vantage points of Wilson Peak near Telluride. I was using google earth and it looks like you can get some reasonable shots from Wilson Mesa and across the way off Last Dollar Road but I was wondering if there were any other spots that gave a good view or if there was a "iconic" spot to shoot from. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Wilson Mesa from Silver Pick road, and Hunt's Mesa on Last Dollar road are probably the most iconic views of both Wilson Peak and Mt Wilson. If you take co145 south to the overlook just before you get to Ophir you get a nice view of Sunshine Peak and Wilson Peak. The same view is had from the ghost town of Alta Lakes which is an easy 4wd drive.
If you take Fall Creek road up to Wood's lake you'll be rewarded with a nice lake view of the west end of the San Miguel range.

Kalin-

Thanks for the reply. I think we will be staying at the Sunshine Campground which seems pretty centrally located so I can get both sunrise and sunset shots! Hopefully the weather and colors will cooperate!

Andy, Sunshine Campground usually closes in late September...you might want to check if it will be open and make alternate plans if it will be closed.

Thanks for the heads up Craig, didnt think of that. Last time I was in the area I just pulled off the side of a road and slept in my truck but I would like to get a place to pitch a tent if possible. Do you know if Matterhorn is open this time of year, or anywhere else nearby that allows tent camping?

Thanks for the help!
