My question is about the Picture Control setting on my D700 which at this point is set on Standard. If you are shooting Raw does this setting have any bearing on what comes out of the Camera or does it only affect a jpg image? Does it affect the image you see on the LCD screen? I want a little more saturated image out of my camera.

JPG yes. Raw yes on preview but is easily changed through NX2.

Thanks, Bob.....what are you guys finding is a good setting on the D700 for Picture
Control. I use Standard without any extra sat or cont. and it sure is flat.....Of course I know that a Raw file is inheriantly flat, but still.

Joe,

An image that's a little flat to start with, whether RAW or jpeg, can be eaily adjusted for birghtness/contrast and saturation in post processing.

For example, I scan my 4x5 transparencies so that the scan file is fairly flat. I do a rough adjustment for color balance and white and black point and then fine tune in Photo Shop.

I have found it easier to adjust upward for (say) saturation, than try to desaturate an over-saturated image.

If you do not do much post processing, and you want a more saturated RAW file, then someone who knows how to change the settings on your camera will need to chime in.

I wish I could be more specific for the D700, but it depends on what you shoot. I am primarily a enviornmental portrait shooter and need to keep my saturation moderate for skin tones. I don't own the D700, but have shot it and the D3 on occasion. I would stay where you are but find the sat and tone/contrast settings and play around testing till you hit your sweet spot.

Joe,

I have the D700 and asked the same question on myself when I first got the camera. If you are shooting people then Standard (SD) or Neutral is best for natural skin tones. Pump up the saturation and skin looks un-natural pretty quickly. You can establish customized settings and name them or just use the presets in "manage picture control" I agree with Preston, if I'm shooting raw then SD or Neutral works best. Pumping an image up is much easier than letting the air out. Been there done that. If you plan to shoot in jpeg than by all means play with the picture control settings in the camera. Ken Rockwell has good article on doing just that. I find I shot a lot of jpegs on family vacations or gatherings. Way too many pics to post process.

On my processing of D700 through NX2 I find the neutral gives more detail in shadows but sharpening has to be done manually. On Standard the sharpening is done with automatically ? or via the preset camera settings. More options are available with RAW and as has been said a really "flat" looking photo can be tweaked to yield a nice rendition through initial RAW processing.

A professional friend of mine keeps saying "neutral". I like both standard and neutral.

The NX2 allows "portrait", "landscape' and "vivid" settings [the latter is available with the camera settings and the former can be added to the camera settings]. I prefer not to use them until sharpness is defined to a specific level.

I can send you examples if you wish.

Vivid is really saturated.
