I'll be in Telluride this weekend and I am hoping to catch the tail end of some peak colors with a few thunderstorms sprinkled in. I am planning on shooting at the Dallas Divide both mornings and possibly taking a hike into the Lizard Head Wilderness on Sunday (weather permitting).

Other than that, my intinerary is completely open. I am specifically looking for sunset locations near Telluride. Also, any other cool locations preferably ghost towns with water and views (High Clearance 2WD). Or any other must see locations for that matter...(I'd love to go the Crystal Mill, but I am thinking it is too much of a drive).

On Monday I'll be traveling towards Cortez, and am planning on shooting along the Delores River.

Any tips/advice is greatly appreciated.

Woods Lake looks like it would be a good location for sunset. Here's a late afternoon view.
There's an old mining camp/town up near Alta l;akes just where the road starts getting rough. In the morning (not sunrise), you can capture a view like this one of Wilson Peak. Your vehicle will definitely make it to there, and it's a drop dead gorgeous drive through aspen forests to boot.
I live in Cortez and think that the Dolores River Valley is an unsung jewel. Do yourself a favor and try to squeeze in time to visit the West Fork of the Dolores River Valley. It roughly parallels the paved highway along the Dolores River, with the most scenic areas in the northern half.
If you see a silver Toyota 4Runner w/Colorado plates stopped alongside the road (or at Alta, or ???), stop by and say 'Howdy!'.

Hey John, does the west fork road require a high clearance vehicle?

Not at all, Joe.
The entrance to the northern section has some steep spots, but after that it's all a fine drive! The Forset Service only notes that section as 'not advisable for trailers'.

Thanks so much John. I appreciate you taking the time. I've copied and pasted the directions to these places. I am definitely going to hit up Woods Lake and visit the Dolores River Valley. Out of curiousity, do you think the West Fork of the Dolores (near Dunton) is more scenic than the strip along the 145? I am driving a gold Nissan Murano with AZ plates - please do the same if you see me.

You're welcome, Michael.
No, the West Fork is not as scenic as the DRV. The best stretch is from the northern entrance to Dunton. If your time is limited, then the DRV is definitely the way to go..
I'll keep an eye out for you.

John,
Is that view of Wilson from Alta still available to shoot. I shot it a few years back then went back there acouple years ago and thought they had put new fences up and fenced everything off. I'd like to go back and shoot it again but was afraid it would still be fenced off.

Well, I simply hopped the fence, Patrick.
