Taken from the hide out in my yard.
Compared to the other garden birds, these jays are massive, luckily I use a zoom lens and can quickly zoom out when they land, well, that's the plan anyway, quite often they're just too quick for me
For such a big bird they are very timid, one click of the shutter and they're off so you have to "wait until you can see the whites of their eyes" as they say, before firing.
They have tiny feet too but don't be fooled by their looks, I've seen one swoop down and kill a smaller bird and fly off with it, they can be nasty when they want to be.
I was only about 9 feet or so away when I took this.

Cracking details Geoff in this capture, the warm tones of the background really compliment the bird too

Lovely capture of these Shy birds Geoff. More at the bottom would have been nice, but I know not possible! Still it's further back now

A hard bird to shoot and some great colours, I agree about the lack of space at the bottom for the tail.

All been said about the tail, but the benefit of losing the tail is that there is some cracking feather detail. Hope you will show us some more from the yard.
