The wife and I will be in Kanab, UT the first weekend in May for a gathering of greyhound dog owners. The last time we were there was while on our way from Zion to the north rim of the Grand Canyon almost 10 years ago. I will only have a few hours a day for some photography, so was wondering if you have any suggestions for photographic places that aren't too far a drive away. I see Coral Pink Sand Dune State Park is nearby. How photogenic is it? Anything else? Thanks in advance for the help.
Coral Pink is nice for sunrise and sunset but you will need to hike around a bit to find a stretch of sand that doesn't have ATV tracks all over it. Page is not too far - you can visit the Antelope Slot canyons. You can also drive to the east entrance of Zion and spend some time in that part of the park.
With just a few hours a day there's not a lot of quick-and-easy places in the immediate vicinity. If this is a once-in-a-blue-moon kind of trip I would consider taking a couple of extra days to explore before going back.
We poked around the area a couple of years ago and completely agree with Guy's take. The only place we actually shot some pictures near Kanab was in Johnson Canyon -- where there are some old movie sets. Here's a shot from the canyon -- as I remember, there wasn't much more than this to look at in terms of photography.

We wanted to attend the Gathering with our hound this year, too, but other activities will take us in the opposite direction.
Have you considered a quick daytrip south to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon for sunset? If the road is open, it might only be a couple hours each way if memory serves.

Red Canyon is real near Kanab, but the sand can be killer. Google'll probably locate it for you.
