Newbie here. We are thinking of going for a day trip from Denver to see the fall colors. Is RMNP past the peak ? What is a good place for tomorrow 10/2 ? thanks in advance

I just returned from the area around Sylvan State Park south of Eagle yesterday. Up higher and a few miles past the park the leaves are pretty much gone, but plenty of nice color a little lower. And also the road towards Fulford Cave, which is close by. A scenic area, though there are not many dramatic peaks.

There should still be some good color at the lower levels of RMNP to go with the elk rut in the early morning and evenings. However, expect large crowds. Also, Estes Park has their elk festival this weekend, so keep that in mind if you go that direction.
Golden Gate Canyon State Park, northwest from Golden may still be good for color, although I haven't seen any reports here.
