Did someone say Crystal Mill?
This is what it looked like the afternoon of 9/27 (my first time at this location, btw). Without any cloud cover it was wicked bright and I was seriously wishing I had an ND.

Comments and feedback are welcome; I had difficulty dealing with the amount of contrast between light and shadow in this image in post.

Shot with a Canon 5D, 17-40mm f/4L, CPL.

Jeff, I was hoping to visit the old mill myself for the first time this year. Never got it done. Maybe in early snow. I like your image. The blue sky sets off the leaves nicely and yours is as good a composition of the site that I have seen. Job well done in my opinion.

Very nice composition. The exposure looks perfect for the midtones. I think the only way you could handle the highlights would be a multi-exposure, manual or software blend. I don't see that a ND would have helped any. Even a GND would be tough, given the distribution of those highlights.

I feel your frustration! I think you did a great job with the conditions. It's funny - we seem to complain no matter what the weather. If it's cloudy, we wish we had some sunlight, and vice versa. Only if the sun is shining dramatically under a dark thundercloud, lighting up whatever we're shooting, are we happy. If it also has a rainbow.

Jeff, I like how you handled the light. I agree with Bill though about a multi-exposure maybe being your best bet. Love the comp!!!

I like this. I think you did a great job and this is such a beautiful scene that I wouldn't worry about the highlights too much.

Looks good to me, too.
The composition is mighty fine, esp. your placement of the river/falls and the tree branch in the top left framing that mountain.
Nothing here is under or over exposed. It's just the time of day that was an obstacle. A slight Shadow/Highlight tweak does help quite a bit in that regard.

You caught "The" view and did it as well as anyone! Great conditions for you and the clarity in your shot is just excellent! :toast:

I like your choice in composition here!

I like the comp too--lots of nice turns to it! Man those leaves are sure green for the end of September...

I like your comp with the river sweep and tree framing. Looks like you did well on bringing out the shadow details.
