Fall color on the Ochoco's
The leaves are beginning to turn on the Ochoco National Forest - especially the Aspen and Cottonwoods around the "Big Summit Prairie" area east of Prineville.

Here are a few from today's drive. I also saw a huge heard of Pronghorn, some wild Turkey's, Mule Deer, Bald Eagles, Belted Kingfishers, River Otter's and several varieties of hawks on my photo trip this morning - plus lots of hunters!

You are right, Cliff - I love fall! The Ochoco's are fun to explore because they aren't as well known for their fall color, yet there are plenty of gorgeous yellows and oranges to be had in the Aspen, Cottonwoods and Western Larch not to mention plenty of Willows.

I discovered an old car in a stand of Aspen's which made for an interesting composition.

Good going, Marcy. Really nice shots, all of them. I love the one with the rusted old car! Sounds like a great outing. Glad you posted these.

Thanks, Catherine - I appreciate the feedback. As many times as I've driven by that Aspen stand, I'd never noticed the old car before. Sure glad I decided to walk down to take some fall color photos or I'd never seen that car!

My favorite is the third one with the rusted car too. Love it. Clearly I am missing some great part of Oregon by not having been to the Ochoco's. Nice work, Marcy.

Hi David,
Thanks for the feedback - I really appreciate it!
If you haven't made a trip to the Ochoco National Forest (especially in the late fall) you are missing out on some wonderful photo ops. Between the gorgeous fall colors of the Aspen, Cottonwoods, Western Larch, Willows, etc, there is a huge variety of wildlife - everything from River Otter to Elk, Bald Eagles to Belted Kingfishers.....By the way, if you head over Hwy 26 toward Mitchell, there are some gorgeous Aspen and Cottonwood stands along the Ochoco Divide around a rest stop and campground.....Lots of old barns, cattle ranches, old rustic wooden fences, old mining buildings and more located around this area. Right now the Rabbit Brush is also in bloom!

By the way, if anyone is interested in getting some images of the old car in the Aspens, let me know and I can tell you how to get there. The leaves are pretty well at their peak right now for the Aspen in this particular area.

Nice shots Marcy. I was through there last june and the wildflowers were close to peaking and the scenery in general was stunning. I saw at least 8-10 bucks in velvet just driving over from Mitchell. I will be visiting in the fall, unfortunately not this year. :toast:
