DVD-R primarily supported by Pioneer and Apple; DVD+R primarily supported by Philips, Dell, Sony, HP, and Microsoft. There are some technical differences having to do with first generation DVD burner compatibility (+R), and dual layer (+R) vs single layer (-R) recording, and compatibility with DVD video players - but as long as your equipment can read/write to a platter, it probably doesn't make much of a difference. Supposedly the +R is slightly more expensive and being a newer technology with somewhat wider industry support, preferred for data storage. Toss a quarter into the air, call it and go out and buy either one, or both - as long as your drive supports it. As with anything computer - make sure as the technology advances you keep a drive around that can read legacy media - otherwise you will end up with a stack of unreadable media.
