No well, jokes apart, it's really quiet here!
I've noticed a dramatic decrease in posts, views and comments to the ESS gallery over the last few days... or even weeks. I wonder if someone else has noticed the same, or is it just me? What's going on?

Definitely noticed about a week ago. I think a lot of people are out hunting colors at the moment and taking fall vacations to do it.
I noticed this too, and ESS is not alone in this, fauna is very quiet as well.

Paolo,
Interesting observation that I must agree with you on. Not sure it's any more than the normal ebb and flow of an online forum, the time of year (fall color) and any number of other reasons like the earth's rotational axis being off by .0004 degrees... (JK, I made that up, don't Google it)
I know I haven't posted in a month now, but can say with certainty that it has nothing to do with anything going on here. I don't believe there's any shortage of posted images. This past Sun-Sat week there were 127 images, the same week last month, less than 100. What seems to have gone down are the number of comments.
In my humble opinion, there are a couple things going on. I get to see and welcome at least 2-3 new members a week and there seems to be a great number of new members this year. And with that, and for any number of reasons that have been discussed quite a bit, the new member tends to comment less, but at the same time due to the nature of wanting feedback on their imagery (which is why they joined...) there are more postings to view and more people reluctant to comment.
The flip side to the new comer, is the long-time and experienced member. Reasons for the experienced member's participation slowing has as many reasons as there are days in the year. Heck Paolo, I think you went AWOL for a little while. I know I haven't posted in a month. It goes back to the ebb and flow thing. The folks on the "pro" side of the house and trying to make ends meet and perhaps focusing more attention on their businesses. Others still where life throws us those little curve balls we need to deal with.
So combine these things and I think some see the increase of posted images and just the numbers alone start to dilute the number and quality of comments being provided.
I will be curious to see how the proposed changes to the NPN membership (see the sticky thread above) will effect this very topic.
I have only been around NPN for four years now and have watched personalities come and go, new ones stepping up and contributing, others fading away... I think it's just the nature of the beast.

Out shooting fall colors or trying to find them without hurting oneself

It's fall in North America and we're all out scouting locations for that "perfect" photo.

This seems to happen from time to time. Don't know if people just get a little burned out or if the changing seasons cause it, but it's usually self correcting after a time.

Its the fall colors and fall rut season in North America. In addition, it is hunting season here. I'm not sure how many NPN members are also hunters, but I'd guess there are some. And for many in the business world, this is a busy time of year as well coming off the summer break and ramping up for the busy seasons ahead.
Been busy preparing images for framing for holiday shows. Also out and about on the last fling before the long cold winter without flowers. As soon as the leaves drop will be back in full force.
Lon, I like the 'natural ebb and flow' concept. As for me, I've been out battling the masses for the perfect tripod holes in front of a tree shedding it's leaves.
