Hello everyone this is my first post on this forum so please go gently with me!! I am a novice wildlife photographer and joined this site to try and improve and learn from fellow members.I can see that this subject isn't quite right but can't put a reason to it?
All feedback is greatly appreciated.
This shot was taken in quite harsh sunlight so not the best and this shot has been cropped, the shots stats are:
Cannon 40D
Cannon 400mm F5.6 @400mm
F5.6
Exp comp - 0
ISO-100

Welcome to UKNP Adam
As for your opening image, you have handled the harsh light quite well and your choice of BG is a corker, the shot looks a little over sharpened but thats easily sorted in PP, so on a whole it's a good start and keep em coming.

No much you can do about light, as I am learning, and if you are not a pro you can't really pick and chose. Whites look OK though and cropping is fine by me!

Adam,
Welcome to the forum. Harsh light and sharpening aside this is an excellent image. You've isolated the subject well, and controlled the tricky exposure.
Ideally I think I'd prefer a more substantial perch, but this one certainly doesn't detract from the image.

Welcome Adam, as Andy said the light was harsh, and the image is a little over sharpened, but it's a good start, as the BG is nicely softened, and there's a catchlight in the bird's eye. Keep it up!
Regards,
Paul Rosser.
Comments above have pretty much covered things Adam. Welcome to the forum and keep posting.

Tough light but you did well, the bird is molting so not looking the best. To improve the image I would have liked the bird a tad over to the right giving the bird more space to look into or shot in portrait composition which I feel the image leads itself very well to, a very good opening shot Adam and welcome
Welcome to the forum
The harsh light didn't help you here, it causes too much contrast, then cropping and over sharpening caused you further problems.
Try a bright, overcast day if you can and you'll see a huge difference
Geoff.

Hello Adam.
Welcome.
A nice first shot to start with. There's not much wrong with your image or composition, the only thing letting it down is the harsh light. Try and shot earlier in the day or later in the afternoon. I see you are using a 40D and an excellent camera they are two, loved mine. I always had mine set with - 1/3 on the compensation which I always felt helped with the whites.
If you are shooting in JPEG then switch over to RAW as this will help a lot when procesing you images to get the best out of them.
All the best and look forward to more of your work.
