Red deer stag bellowing
i know this doesn't compare favourably to some of the stag pictures from deer parks seen on here around this time of year, but i am pleased with it all the same as it is wild and i have never taken any rutting red deer shots before, spent quite a few hours in my hide over the weekend and was rewarded with some amazingly close views,

the deer were still suspicious of my hide though because of the clicking shutter despite wrapping my cammera in a fleece, not sure how to remedy that for future

Jack, this is a magnificant capture, and I congratulate you on getting a truly wild animal, but the lighting is a little too flat for my liking. I suggest you increase the contrast, and brighten the image overall if necessary. There is a bit more quality to tease out here, and goodness knows the shot is worth it.

Hi Jack,
I echo David's comments that this is a very good capture, in a nice wild setting. I know what you mean about the noisy shutter - I have the same problem with my 1D3, which seems unneccessarily loud.

Well done for getting so close.

Jack, you are underestimating this image. It is an excellent stand alone picture which as David mentioned can be improved a bit in post processing. The fact that it is a wild animal makes it even more special and must give you not only pleasure at seeing the result but great pride in your fieldcraft. If I had to pick any fault with it I would say it is a shame that the sky in the top left of the frame wasn't more trees but that would be unavoidable as you were shooting from a hide so don't worry about it. Nice one. :toast:

A cracking image Jack, executed well. great to see them in the wild and those cool colours set the moment. Agree, a little more PP on this and it will hit the mark. Personally the sky doesn't worry me, but to have more trees behind would have been ideal. look forward to more.

In the same boat, need to sit tight in my hide and not press shutter untill buffer fills up  cos they wander off. I like this one, wish it were on my wall!

Jack you really are underselling this image, it just needs a bit more processing to turn it from excellent to superb, well done :toast: :toast: :toast:

Hello Jack.

Lovely portrait and I would agree with a bit more processing this could be a very strong image.

Love the composition, pose and the eye contact.

Considering the light a great capture of a truely wild stag.
