It's aboot time!

My first thought as I work my way through the photos (I'll read the trip report afterwards) is your incredible knowledge of peak names. Not that I'd expect anything less from you, DK, but you could call 'em Mount Whatever and we'd be none the wiser. So far, so good! I like Day 17 best so far, but I'm only on Day 18.

So, I will admit, I did not read every line...but I did just spend about an hour going through each page and looking at every picture in the report. It looks like you had an INCREDIBLE trip. Sounds amazing, and looked amazing. Did ya ever miss civilization? Being clean? A nice warm steak or what ever?
First off...my favorite picture is prob. the Peyto Lake shot taken @ 10:55 A.M.
Second...can you explain to me how those pocupine things work? I can't figure out how they detract porcupines, or what they are actually trying to detract...do the porcupines go in your car or something? I'm just confused....
Thanks for posting...INCREDIBLE!!

Whew, I've only been cruzin' the photo's so far. I think I'll have to set a whole evening (or 2) aside with some popcorn like John.
You'd think they would call the Vermillion River anything but vermillion! That's pretty funny.
Looks awesome so far.

I don't even know where to start Darren. First of all, this is truly inspiring. You live what others dream of. Camping in the 4Runner: ingenious. 44 days: awesome. The number of pics that you took: rediculous. Thanks for sharing. This must have taken FOREVER to put together. Did you journal as you went?
I have only started to go through your pages. Great shots well done. I can only imaging how much time it took to compile this and put it together. Great job.

Awesome! Looks like I'll have to set my National Geographic aside for the next few evenings...
Looking forward to it!
Edit: The self portrait of Big D on the first page - short, sandals - friggin' CLASSIC!!

Looks like a great trip Darren. I've only had time to quickly scan through the photos, but I'll take some time over the next few days to read the whole trip report. I'll only comment on the large number of photos taken from a moving vehicle. Keep your eyes on the road, man!
Posted by Tom Mangan on March 27, 2006 at 10:55 AM
Darren: Thats one heck of a road trip. As I was reading through it last night I had an incredible urge to pack up the truck, head west and quit my job today. But alas, reality set in and I'm sitting at my desk here at work dreaming of what if's!. Great stuff.

Darren, very inspiring to say the least. And congrats on simply completing this massive report. And what a report! Thanks for sharing. I won't have a problem killing free time this week.

Well aside from this being truly epic, I am awed by the impressive presentation. The day by day account is incredible, love the humor. I have read all of it up to day18. Now I have to go finish, great job Darren.....................J

Darren - thanks for document a trip as well as you did. The images are lots of fun to looks at as well! They are helping me get through a dull teleconference.
Posted by Todd Caudle on March 27, 2006 at 3:16 PM
Ya know, DK, I agree with you on that "best photo" comment. That rates a 12 on a 10-scale. But I disagree with your choice for second-best. That snowstorm at Tangle Falls shot is to DIE for!
Posted by Chris Martin on March 27, 2006 at 4:31 PM
That is an awesome report! It has me dreaming about when I can get up there! All in all it was great fun to read and the photos are excellent.
I'm up to day 12. Darren, this is great stuff! My favorite so far has been the "Avalanche" area in Montana (I think that was it). Can't wait to keep going.
Thanks for all your hard work in this. Any thoughts as to putting together an article for a travel or photography magazine?
Great job, Darren. It will probably take me more than 44 days to read it all, but I'm certainly impressed by the few random pages I've looked at so far.

No offense to your sammich-making skills, but I was referring to your b&w shot of the falls. Incredible.
I'll take the 5th on the "paying for camping when you're only there for a few hours" poll.

Saaaawwwwweeeetttttt!!! So many photos... what an epic road trip. Your truck looks badass in the mountains.

Awesome virtual adventure (for me)! I love a lot of your Idaho shots too. And I agree with Todd, when I saw the Tangle falls in the snow shot I gasped (I liked it so well).
I have an unexplainable craving for tortellini and bologna for some reason?

Darren, this is a epic travel log; thanks for sharing. I wanted to go to this area of Canada already, but after seeing this it's only a matter of time until I get there myself. I haven't been able to read it all, but scanning through the pictures these are the ones that jump off the screen and scream print me (LARGE). Since you saved all that money not paying for camping, you should be able to print a few without feeling too guilty about it. BTW, I'm with you on the fee for camping when you are there for only a few hours at night and you don't use any of the provided amenities.
Here's my list of faves in no particular order. You might want to add a visible number to the frames for easier identification.
7:20am Peyto Lake - Love that sky
8:07pm Bowman Lake
9:14am Moraine Lake - This and Peyto are awesome lakes
5:30pm Emerald Lake
11:39am Tangle Falls in Snow
7:52pm Sunset @ Medicine Lake - Gorgous
8:20am Mt Fryatt and Whirlpool Peak - The contrasts are great in this one
6:20pm Mt Rundle from Vermillion Lake #1
6:35pm Castle Mtn and Bow River (vertical)
Again, thanks for sharing as this will become a wealth of information to others traveling in these areas. I always used your travel logs for Colorado and I'm sure I'll reference this when I make my trip up North.
Contrats on your awesome journey

Just finished reading your trip report. Not every word, but most of them. It was wonderful. Some killer pics as well. If you had to boil the trip down to just one week, where and what would you suggest visiting??
Posted by Bill Pelzmann on March 28, 2006 at 10:50 PM
WOW!! Very enjoyable. I had to stop at day 19, but will return.
For those with dialup, reading this should take longer than your trip.
Awesome shots man! My wife and I took a very similar route the first time we went up to Banff and Jasper (via Glacier) and had a wonderful time. Looking through your trip report takes me back to my trip and all the fond memories and images that I came home with. I liked some of the areas you hit that we did not make it to - on my to do list for next time!
You came home with some great images!! Thanks for putting all that hard work in so I can day dream while sitting here at work...

I read through most of it and looked at each of the pictures and all I can say is WOW!! I can't believe how detailed your report is. I would also have to agree with your best shot and I really liked the Avalanche Gorge as well. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Darran for sharing your adventures with the World. It was very enjoyable to read your diary and look at the gorgeous photos. Thanks again.

...and...... I've finished reading it! Very nice. I agree with you on your choice for the best shot. I also love some of the photos on day 13.... and many others! I'm VERY jelous. BTW - I'm getting a JS error each time I change pages on your site. (I'm using IE and windows XP. Let me know if you want more details on the error msg).
Wow, Darran, you have raised the bar for trip reports to a stratospheric level. I can just imagine how many hours and days you spent putting it together. I too felt the snow day at Tangle Falls was superior.....by the way, what kind of device do you use to attach the umbrella to the tripod and what kind of handle is on the umbrella that mates with it.
Anyway, if had them I'd give you 3 thumbs up, but you'll have to settle for only 2 at the moment....maybe if I photograph Rocky Flats Arsenal for a while, that 3rd thumb might be possible.
As I do with most of my reading material, I focused on the pictures and only scanned the text.
Seriously, that's an incredibly impressive body of work, Darren. I actually did read quite a few of the daily logs in addition to checking out all of the pics. Glad that the border search didn't get too invasive! Hard to pick favorites with such a variety of excellent shots, but the Peyto Lake one above, the Medicine Lake shot from day 24 and the Mt. Rundle/Vermillion Lake shot from Day 33 all are stand-out images, imho. And while great images are always a nice thing to bring home, if I'm ever fortunate enough to take such an epic journey, I'm sure it would be the journey itself that would be the best prize. Congrats on making it happen and on bringing home some killer shots. Although...I think the best part is that you took a week vacation only 1 week later... that's too funny!
