A Year Ago and Far Away
Slightly larger version

Exhaustion and distraction kept me from sharing much from my Turkey trip last year, but in the spirit of fall color season, here's an offering. The Black Sea Range in northeastern Turkey had some really terrific color, lots of great-looking aspen groves in the wild valleys, and nice deciduous and orchardy things in the inhabited places. The Turks we met were extremely generous with their time, driving us all over the mountains to see the sights, feeding us wonderfully, taking us hiking way up high, and generally being perfect hosts. But we all know how it is trying to do serious photography on non-photographers' schedules. This was the only fall color I managed to get in decent light, after we had descended thousands of feet from the range crest to meet our ride in this village.

I'm interested in what you all think of the processing here. It's one of those shots that I've re-worked several times and never felt quite happy with, though I think I've finally gotten close.

Amusingly, the main town we stayed in was called Gümüşhane (pic), which translates to "Silverton." It did remind me of a San Juan mining town, if the San Juans had ruined castles perched on the cliffs and old churches and monasteries scattered about the passes.

Ain't it the truth?
This is leagues above a simple travel snapshot and one you should be pleased to have in the visual diary of your trip. Processing look perfect. Nothing looks unnatural at all.
I enjoyed the shot of 'Silverton' you linked to. It was fun to see the parallels between that perspective you captured and our own Silverton.

I think the processing looks great. I really enjoy seeing photos from other parts of the world and like your narrative. Nice work.

It's very well balanced and the colors are really nice. The inclusion of the cliffs in the background give scale to the town and vice versa.

What a fantastic image, Jackson! Love it. Processing looks perfect to me. Beautiful colors, nice light, a quaint village...it's pretty much a fairy tale. Good stuff!
