Hey guys,

I was going out of my mind looking at all your pictures from the Fall get together. And I was bummed I couldn't make it with many crazy things going on between work and family. So I took a quick kamikaze run over Tioga Pass last Saturday (10/9) with my two oldest kids (9 & 6). We car camped at Parker Lake and had a blast amoungst the Aspens.

Anyway this sunset was quite a reward after driving many hours from Monterey.

Special thanks to Steve Sierren for talking about this region during last Fall's get together. Most of the time I blow right through here without stopping to take in the scenery. I only wish we had more time to explore as the whole lower region near the campgrounds (close to Whoa Nellie Deli) was on fire with Aspens last weekend as well.

BTW, this will probably be my last post for a while here since the new rules go into effect next month for non-members. I may join at some later point. But finances are a bit tight right now. I'll most likely still lurk and enjoy the photos. And I'll still be posting on the free sites like FM, Flickr, and a few others.
NPN forums have been fun to participate in. :toast:

Derek, looks like you got your fall fix. Nice peaks and colorful trees. I take it this was up near thetop of the pass?

Yeah Steve, it was right at the hair pin turn at the top of the grade just before dropping down the decent into Lee Vining Canyon. But the whole region where you wanted to camp last year was filled with colorful aspens along the same stream that flows down from the top of the canyon. So I really wanted to investigate that area more. I just didn't have the time on this mini-trip.

Derek,
We'll miss your contributions. I particularly like the detail in the leaves and brook. Of course, the sky doesn't hurt the image either! Glad you got a little fall color action. Best Regards.

Derek, pretty kool shot. I know this place exactly and I like how you have composed it. the colors makes it even more exciting. I was also there last weekend but to the south. as for the membership, I am also in the same boat as you. it would have been good if NPN had different levels of membership with a cheaper option.

Thanks guys,

I have really enjoyed participating and meeting various ppl on NPN both here and while living in CO. So I do have mixed feelings about it. Yet since this is primarily a hobbie for me, albeit an expensive one, I can't really justify the annual fee simply to participate in a forum. I wouldn't be using any of the other services. At some later point who knows. I do know that the input gained on NPN along with the folks I have met and shot with in the field have helped my photography considerably. So for that I am grateful.

I also know the folks at NPN have to keep the lights, etc... so I can understand changing things to a pay for service type site. It does make me wonder though how many of those remaining folks who participate at times in the forums will decide to join based on the latest decisions. Times are tough now for a lot of folks photographers included.

Anyway keep up the good work and thanks for your input.

glad you were able to make a trip over as it's been an incredible year for color. I was on tioga pass on sat 10-16 and those aspens were stunning in color. Lots of people stopping to take home a piece of it.

Cory,

Did you explore the lower regions of Lee Vining Canyon as well near the campgrounds and river? That looked really good as well.

Hi Derek,

No, I only saw it from 120. It looked from there the best color was still only to the ranger station down low or so; maybe 50-60% all the way towards the hydro plant?? This coming weekend I think would be better I think. Though with highs forecasted to be in the upper 40sto mid 50s and on and off storms I'm not sure how quickly the colors will progress. I was out there a week ago and colors progressed very fast in this past week from mammoth to LV.
