I had an awesome full day of photography this past sat (10-16) which yielded some pretty nice images if I do say so myself. The approaching storm made for some great lighting conditions on the ground and in the sky.
My day began below the mountains of Morrison and Laurel, then up near the parker bench, on to the tioga pass area, and finally ended at mono lake, which is the image I've posted here.
I stopped at south tuffa beach which was crawling with people, which I kinda figured would be the case. So off to my little spot east of navy beach I went were not one person could be found for the entire evening I was there. The more I visit this spot the more I am understanding what it is that people so enjoy about this lake-the peaceful tranquility. Just the sound of the small lapping waves coming ashore, a light breeze and the occasional sounds of the floating birds.
As I ate my dinner on the tailgate of the jeep, I watch this little rain band drift slowly by. As I headed off towards the tuffas in the distance I chose to make this image from a distance to give the feel of gazing upon the tuffas for the first time. We didn't get a major pink sunset but a stellar one still and a beautiful evening to be out-near t shirt weather!
An update on color: nearly everything visible from 395 is at peak or very close to it. The June lake loop near grant and silver lakes is probably 80-90%. Still some green left around silver so this coming weekend should still be very good barring any strong winds.

Nice light and comp, Cory. I spent an evening at this same spot, and can't believe I ever wasted time at South Tufa. What a zoo! What a beautiful place this is, and I also had it all to myself when I was there. I'm envious that you live so close to all this. I've had your Bishop web cam in my "favorites" for the longest time, and always wondered how cool it would be to have a view like that from home.
Real nice take on Mono Lake. Great clouds directly over the tufas really make the image. Well done.

As you said, Cory, you benefitted from wonderful light.
I also like the positioning of the tufas in this composition.
Thanks for sharing.

Cory, I think your statement says it all, it certainly hit home for me...and having a camera on a tripod makes it more enjoyable, well done

Cory,
Great sky and light. Navy Beach is a nice alterative to the south tufa and I've been there about five times in the last year or so, and had the place to myself each time. I usually save the south tufa for cold windy days (and usually after a day of skiing at Mammoth). Also, if I go to the south tufa, I usually turn left at the lake and walk about another mile or so, and there are usually not many people around. I was there Monday evening, but it poured rain and I spent most of the time in the truck.

This is what Mono lake is all about. Superb lighting on a nicely composed scene.

Cory,
Better be careful... this spot may be the next South Tufa! Where did you say this was?
This certainly does capture that feeling of being there. And probably even more so in the dark....
I'm surprised you didn't try this one in b&w. Your previous works have been outstanding.
Hey Cory, it's been quite sometime since we talked. Good to see your recent post here. No doubt Mono is a big favorite for sierras goers, even for us flatlanders. From your comment it sounds like you still got your old jeep too, not unless it's a newer version. I like the storm action taking place here, almost looks like there is some virga taking place as well over the lake area.

thanks mike, Lon, & Paul!
@Lon: this was at the far side of the lake ;) I new this would be a slam dunk in b&w while out there but felt this one in color at the time.
@Paul: it' been awhile hasn't it? I've been a bit of a social recluse as of late. Yep, got my wrangler but the jeep I took out there was the wife's GC. ya, that's a little virga coming down from the clouds. Hope all is well with you Paul.
