I currently have LR2 on my old computer running Windows XP (32 bit). I have now purchased a new PC running Windows 7 (64 bit) and have also bought LR3. I have read in various places how to move my LR catalog from my old computer to my new computer, but I am wondering if there will be a problem since my catalog is now in LR2 and I will be moving it to LR3 on my new computer. I would rather not install LR2 onto my new computer, move the catalog and then upgrade to LR3 if possible. But does anyone know if it will work ok to move from LR2 to LR3? Any suggestions for this process would be greatly appreciated.

Carol: I'm going to make a couple of assumptions here. You are moving (or copying) all of your images from the old PC to the new PC and keeping them in the same directory structure that you had on your old PC. By moving (copying) your Lightroom 2 catalog from the old machine to the new, you simply mean copying the files (I think there are 2) that comprise the Lightroom 2 catalog. If those assumptions are true, when you start Lightroom 3 for the first time and point it to your Lightroom 2 catalog, it will ask if you'd like to upgrade your catalog to the new format for Lightroom 3. It will create a new catalog (i.e. it will not overwrite your Lightroom 2 catalog) and do all of the internal conversion stuff to make Lightroom 3 happy. I did not move machines when upgrading from LR 2 to LR 3, just installed LR 3 and started it up. It knew where the LR 2 catalog was and did it's thing. This was all on a Mac, but I doubt that has any affect on the overall process. Hope that helps.

Carol, Keith has it right, if you are moving all your files you may have to tell LR3 where the files are, but if they were on a C: drive and they are going to a C: drive it might just be fine. The first time you open LR3 it will ask you if you want to upgrade your catalogs to LR3. Since you've done some research you know where to find the catalog from LR2, just find the corresponding folder in LR3 - it's pretty much in the same place and transfer it into there. If you have any 3rd party plugins (such as Jeff Friedls' plugins) you'll have to upgrade them when you go to LR3, it works quite a bit differently.
