Fortnightly Challenge # Winter Light
Canon 10D, Canon 17-40mm L @17mm, 1/10 sec @ f11, Aperture priority,
Evaluative metering, Raw, iso 100. Gitzo 1548/B1, mlu.
Full frame.

Hi,

Thought I'd get the ball rolling for the current Fortnightly Challenge with this shot.

Taken back in November,2005.
I wasn't really out intending to do any landscape photography on this occasion,I was just on my way to my feeding station to replenish the bird food, always carry the camera though just in case.

It was shortly after sunrise and the sun was very obscured by mist and fog,it temporarily cleared for just a couple of seconds allowing the sun to come through a little stronger,I thought the hazy sunlight was quite attractive and managed to take just a couple of frames before everything was completely engulfed in thick fog, with visibility down to a matter of yards.

Thought it would fit the theme quite well.

Lovely light and composition, Justin. It certainly pays to get up early!
Where was it taken? It has the look of one of those New Forest rivers about it.

Hi Jeremy,
Good to see you around :wavey: . No this particular spot isn't actually in the New Forest itself, only about 10 miles away though, although the actual river could well run through the Forest at some point.

I don't usually comment on landscapes Justin as this something I don't do for some reason, why I don't know  The location looks like a dream place to have a feeding station, it looks so peaceful

Off topic I know but I couldn't help myself, sorry .... What gets my attention in this shot is the Oak trees on the right, just off the river bank. Looks like a great location for an Owl Box to be positioned, the tree in which the trunk can be easily seen from the distance, positioned 10-16ft from the ground pointing towards the camera's view, you also mentioned the fog or shall I say misty fog from the river, perfect for Barn Owls camo! River banks are their favoured haunts

A cracking landscape picture :toast:

Hi Vince,

It's funny you should say that as I've seen a Barn Owl on two occasions at this location, the first time was in the middle of the day,he flew out from a large Oak tree, not the one you mention, but an identical one a couple of hundred yards further on.The second occasion he was hunting in the field opposite. Not seen him this year, but then I'm not often down there around dusk.
That's a good idea about the owl box,I might have a word with the land owner next time I bump into them.

While on the subject of owls.I've also seen a Tawny owl a few times in the small wooded area a bit further on,which was a pleasant suprise. The first occasion was last year,I was sat up a tree in the evening , like you do  , I must have been dozing off (not the safest place for a nap  ) and woke up to see this beautiful Tawny owl no more than 25 feet away,at the same height,on the bough of the next tree, staring straight at me,talk about shocked,I nearly fell out of the blimmin' tree.
Saw him again last week, so perhaps he's back in the area on a regular basis,I hope so.

Also got four buzzards,a kestrel and a sparrohawk in the area.

Anyway,enough rambling from me.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Justin, sorry I haven't got back to this thread sooner, I have been to busy sat in a tree waiting for a damn Tawny Owl . Good news to hear there is a Barn Owl there already, for some reason I had a gut feeling as it looks an ideal location.

If the landowner wants a nest box or if he wants to make his own & needs advice on sizes & locating it get him to call us, I am always on hand to offer support.

The story regarding the Tawny Owl made me laugh  I bet the Tawny was thinking a lot of strange things seeing a human perched in a tree lol.

Stunning location for wildlife & a great image :toast:

Hi Justin,

A nicely balanced composition with great atmosphere :toast: I find it a very restful image but then I'm always a sucker for misty landscapes!

Cheers,

Kevan
