I had a blast photographing colorful scrub oaks and aspens in the La Sals over the last couple of days. Yeah, that's what I said - aspens. Yes, it is almost November but apparently no one told the aspen trees in the La Sals. Those quintessential autumn trees have some seriously stiff competition from multi-hued scrub oak, though. In two days of photography up there I saw precisely zero other photographers. Life is very, very good.

Now, get packed, charge your camera batteries and grab the map. Fall color awaits...

Your last link has a mistake in it (some bonus characters on the end), but these are cool pics, Bret. I like that chaotic aspen one a lot. Very Cramer-esque.

The colors contrasting with the charred snags are just spectacular!

The charred snags against the vibrant oak brush in the first image makes a pleasing abstract to me. Nice.

I agree that the dusky colors of scrub oaks are wonderful.

Hey Bret- That first shot of the scrub and charred trunks is amazing! Just went thru moab on the way to Arizona but did not have time to stop- guess I missed it. maybe will see you this winter after some fresh snow. Will be hard to duplicate last year's snow in Moab.

I really like what you did with the first image...tres cool!
Scrub oak doesn't get nearly the respect as do the neighboring aspen trees,
but you sure went a long way to according it some here.

Love the variations of color in the scrub oak image.

Some nice work here, Bret, but that first one is drop dead gorgeous! Well done!

Thanks, everyone! I had a blast wandering around up there, all alone but for the occasional hunter or deer.
John: Funny, I'm working on a blog post about the lowly scrub oak playing second fiddle to the aspen. Hope you're having fun in your part of the desert, too!

Who needs aspens when you've got scrub oak like this?
How about scrub oak AND some aspen trees?
Okay, fine...here's a few aspens.
One more for the underappreciated scrub oak.
