Surveying way in the back of beyond near Abiquiu, New Mexico, I came across this old lone cottonwood tree in a wide arroyo. I was interested enough in it to photograph it, but later when I got home I found it wasn't quite working for me.
Ever have one of those?
I still thought it was interesting enough to try and do something with, so I ran it through an old, discontinued PS plug-in I have called BuZZPro , which 'simplifies' images to help create works of 'art'.
What do you think...yay or nay? Sure appreciate any feedback.

The original...(compression artifacts, yada yada )

...and the BuZZed version.
Note that even though BuZZPro is history, Topaz labs took it upon themselves to emulate that filter's effects and created Topaz 'Simplify'.

Makes ya feel like somebody was sitting there with a canvas painting this...I kinda like it.

John, I think this is the perfect subject for this sort of treatment...I really like it. I have Topaz Simplfiy myself and periodicly try it with various subject matter....it has many more options than the old Buzz. Joe Rogers

Well, considering where it was taken it sort of has a Georgia O'Keefe feel. I like it a lot but wish there was more space at the bottom. The effect eliminates some of the messy twigginess in the original.

I think it's very cool. Take a photo that's not working for you and turn it into something that's different enough to catch your attention. It definitely has its own style. I like it.

I like it a lot, John. If I could paint, this is the type of work I'd do.

I like it. It does simplify the image and the yellows really stand out.

That was a great subject for this "simplification". I like it.

Like Pam said, a little more room at the bottom would be nice but overall I like it.

John, I like it. I agree with Pamela on a bit more space at the bottom of the image, but I think this would be really cool art. It really is like a painting and the colors of this image work very well.

Print this on canvas now! Incredible transformation, and I like the photo anyway, but man does that filter treatment take this somewhere else. Do you ever shoot those hills that Georgia painted? Great lines and colors.

Thanks, folks!
A small canvas print sounds like a great idea.

I really like this! The deeper yellows and oranges with the blue really make this work.

This is really niiiice! The contrast doesn't get better. Please consider Pamela's advice and for a digital rendition add more bottom.
I'd call the experiment a success, John! I like it better than most of what I see in the galleries down here.

I like it, John, and I'll second Morris' suggestion, too.

Nay.
I think it would have worked if there was more bg seperation at the bottom--just gets too busy down there. The salvage-a-cool-subject-with-PS filter trick rarely works for me, it takes just the right subject to work
However, if you ignore my vote (God forbid) i would suggest making the top of the sky the same or similar as the bottom, the yellow/orange seems to contrast better against the lighter blue.

I'm surprised no one else said this, but I really like the original.

Hmmm... I'm kind of leaning towards the original as well. I was never much of a fan of these effects so that might just be my own preference. Still a sweet capture

I like it, and I agree---a canvas print would work well.
