One more image from the epic E. Sierra trip at the beginning of October. Just North of Mojave past the 58 JCT. Only time enough to cross the Hwy pull off into the dirt and catch the sunset before the light died. At least there was one lonely Joshua tree to anchor the mid ground. I considered this an omen of what was to be one of my best weekends ever of shooting images. Olympus E-500 ( I was in such a hurry I can't remember the settings. )
The dynamic range here is simply too large to render effectively; the range here is over ten stops. An ND Grad would have helped so that you could retain more detail in the foreground. I also think the J-tree is too centered. A few steps to the right would have given this better balance, I think.
Except for the orange hues, which look a bit over-saturated to me, the color in the sky is pretty good.
This was a good effort, and the light is certainly dramatic, but you had conditions that are very difficult to tame.

I agree with Preston. The bright spot in the sky makes this almost impossible to do without blending exposures. But this is still a nice scene and a great sunset.
