I have been doing senior pictures, I have noticed when I burn photos to CD for the clients, their is a "lock" icon above each photo on the CD I just burned?

Will this be a problem for client's being able to use the photos with unlimited restriction?

If so, is their a way to turn this off in photoshop CS4?

Any input will be great!

Dave,

As Steve indicated, this could be copy and/or overwrite protection that was activated by your CD burning application. You might take a peek at the manual for your application and/or its product support site.

Thanks for the info, I use "Nero Smart Essentals" for burning CD/DVD's, it may not be a problem then..I will visit their site.

P.S. Not to sound like a dummy, I have used CS3 and now CS4, I did not know you could burn disc with it or can you?

Thanks again,

Dave

Hmmm, maybe you could give us all your particulars...platform (Mac or PC), what process you use and settings, program used to burn them, etc. I use a Mac and always use the Mac OS to burn CD/DVD's. Never have a lock icon anywhere under any of the views of the disks.

All you should have to do is re-install your disk and use your OS to copy one of your files to your harddrive. Can you THEN open it with any or all of your image programs? Can you manipulate the image with them? If so, then your client should too. Or else, take the disk to someone with a different system and software than yours and try the above steps.

If neither of you or your friend's system can utilize the image, then you certainly do have a problem and it would seem to be the software you are using to burn the CD/DVD. AS you are already doing, check out the software and find out what all the settings are. Perhaps there is a lock setting that blocks modifying the file. There may be software that lets you open and print the file but has locked it so no one can modify the file you send them. There are good reasons for this and bad reasons for this. It all depends on what you want to allow. Personally, never run into this. I would opt to let people modify my file for their need as long as I trust them and have an idea of why they want my image and how it is going to integrate into their needs.

Good luck!

Hi Dave. When I put a disk in the hard drive to burn it a message comes up giving me a choice of a USB drive which allows you to save, edit or delete; or CD/DVD which allows only viewing and does not allow edits and deleting. Check the USB drive option. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all of your replys, I think it is the program I am using. I only use write once cd/dvd's. This may be a protection feature to keep them from being over written when adding additional files to the same disk.

I have scanned in pictures for friends in the past and saved them to a CD. They had no problem resizing, printing..etc..when the copy the files to their computer.

In my first post, I only give clients the photos I do for them once I am paid for the session. After that they can do what ever with the photos. I release all rights to them. This has actually gotten me more business. Many have come back for additional prints to do once they find out they do not get as good as quility for processing centers like walmart..ect..I am not bashing other types of business, but the quaility shows.

As for my wildlife and other photos, I do not give them out on CD's, I only sell prints of them. Right now my business is by word of mouth, people I do senior or family photo sessions for show the work to others. They visit my site or just give me a call, I do not advertise yet. I'm still working full time.

Between us, I have a long way to go to reach the calibur of most of you on this site..but..through you, my own photography has greatly improved, and I am starting to make some money at it.

Again, thanks for all of your replies.
