What would you buy? Wait for new models to come out?

I need some recommendations on larger glass lenses.
I have a Gitzo GT3541XLS Tripod Real-Right Stuff BH-55 Ball Head
Never used either one. Have the opportunity to use and purchase a 600mm this saturday. Gimbal Head is a must. 800mm if price is right.
Uses - Wildlife and birding
Thanks
Jay

What do you need to do with the lens?

Have you used either one - what for and what observations do you have?

Are you willing to consider the used market?

What tripod are you currently using?

Are you considering a gimbal head?

Is the 800 an option (probably not, but I thought I would ask)?

I decided long ago that when I move up from my 300 f2.8, I would choose the 500 f4 rather than the 600 f4, primarily due to weight. The 500 hundred has the extra advantage of also being lighter on the wallet.

The 300 with 1.4x and 2.0x is usually long enough for me shooting shorebirds, seabirds, and wading birds. 500mm, with the two TCs will give me pretty much all the reach I need for the subjects I shoot, so I'm glad not to need the bulk and mass of the 600.

Every time I see this question asked it seems the majority of the answers lean toward the 500. That's what I opted for partially due to cost, but also the lighter weight.

Here's an article I recall reading when I was faced with a similar decision. It may have additional points to consider.

In case, I'm into birds photography only, I may opt for 600mm but in case subjects are mammals alone or mammals with birds too, I may opt for 500mm.Cost and weight are important considerations too.

Jay, be aware that Canon is redoing all its larger glass. The new 500mm and 600mm will be out early next year with much improved IS and lighter weights. Cost will be more too of course. The 600mm may weigh close to what the current 500mm weighs. I love my 500mm and with the 1.4x TC you can reach out pretty good. I hand hold my 500 but would not want to HH the old 600. The new one, well maybe, depending on what the weight comes in at. I don't think you could go wrong with either lens depending on what you want, how you will use it, and what you are willing to pay.

I owned the 800mm at one point and I can say that it is an amazing piece of glass. It was great for eagles and other raptors when combined with a tc. The downside was the bulk and the weight of course, but when you need a lens like this usually you plan for carrying it. It is pricey, but worth it if you can swing it. I do miss this lens a great deal, but I am a ship jumper and now carry the black lenses.

500 Great cost savings and lighter. With the crop factor in the camera I'm usually to close as it is and have to continually back off. If you need the extra distance then use a 1.4x.
