Well for me its a bit tight in the frame and would have been nice to see the tail, but it holds excellent detail in the feathers and the eye and is a very nice portrait

Hello Phil
I can see where Dave is coming from but I like it tight in the frame I think it works on this shot, so sharpe you can cut yourself. Nice one.

Hi Phillip
I don't normally like birds this tight in the frame but for some reason I find this works. Love the BG and good detail in both the blacks & whites!

Hi Phillip, I think you have the material here for a great headshot - crop a bit further. Anyway love the details, and the perfect exposure of the white breast
The first thing that strikes me is the superb quality and excellent exposure.
As a stand alone image or as a print I'd prefer the bird a little smaller in the frame, but as an image to accompany a series of other variously composed Woodpecker shots, I'd say it makes a great addition to a collection, and really gives the viewer an insight into the beauty of this species when seen at close range, like this.
I like it.

Hi all thank you for taking the time to look and comment, I am quite fond of getting them quite large in the frame as I enjoy looking at fine detail I do have a few more with a bit more room around them.
Lovely shot and oozing quality and sharpness!! I know what you mean about cropping quite tight to show detail.. I'm fond of that myself. But from a purist point of view, I agree with the others. Excellent shot Phillip. The background makes a huge difference to the tone of the image. Wonderfully balanced in my view. Regards, Graeme
