Short Eared Owl
I have been waiting all year to start working with the shorties on their winter grounds. Today was my first day out with them and with luck there will be many more. Very much a work in progress.

Thanks for looking.

Nikon D3S with Nikon 600mm lens and 1.4TC.
1/1,250 sec, F5.6 at ISO 1000.
PP in LR3. Full Frame.

If that is your start I look forward to your finish  Beautiful image and BG is just made for the SEO - and a meal to boot. Couldn't be better. :wavey: :toast:

Very nicely done Andrew.

The eye detail, the prey, the wing shape and overall colours / tones are excellent.

I think that a vertical crop / composition would strengthen this even more.

Cheers

Very nice Ian and I think a vertical as Austin says might be worth a try to increase the impact a tad,

Great to see shorties - none for a couple of years for me :frown: . It's a lovely pose and the vole is a real bonus. I can't make my mind up on the white balance though - maybe a little on the yellow side?

Andrew

If this is the start what's the end going to be like? Brilliant.

That's a beauty. I am quite happy with the crop as is, but you have lots of options with this. One of the best I have seen.

Hi Andrew

Nice start to your project - good luck from here on in. The value of project work shouldn't be underestimated as it provides the opportunity to perfect images and increases the potential to capture rare/different events.

This shot is not quite there for me; the bird would have been better placed on the right and the moment of shutter release has just missed the point at which more of the bird's face would have been visible to the camera, before it started banking away. A big plus for capturing a successful hunt though.

Cheers,
Chris

Chris, I totally agree with you on the composition required for that perfect image, hence the health warning. Yesterday was the first visit to this site (which I guess will get very busy going forward) and it took all of the time the Shorties showed yesterday to become attuned to the way they fly. Going back today for some more. Cheers, Andrew

Andrew

Good luck - I'm not envious that you have such a promising site at all!

Cheers,

Hi Andrew,

Great action shot. :toast: :toast: Lovely lighting on a stunnig subject. Fantastic to have caught the prey in its beak.

Can't wait for the next installment! That's the beauty of projects.
