Is there a reputable site , that keeps you up to date on upcoming contests? I'd like to "try my hand" at winning or placing in photo contests. But, on the web, they could just as easily be a scam to steal photos than a legitimate contest!

Not really. Certain site will list contests closer to their specialties but nothing that tries to be comprehensive.

With any contest, read the rules very, very carefully. Unfortunately, my working assumption, unless I see it in writing otherwise, is that a contest is a rights grab. If you are in doubt, don't enter.

I don't consider limited use of the images of the winners to be a major issue - using the 2010 winners to promote the 2011 contest is probably in everyone's best interest. Of course, then you get into was is an acceptable amount of use for the winners (or even non-winners). That you'll have to decide for yourself. Again, read the rules and if need be, contact the organizers. If you don't like thier answer, walk away.

I agree with Dan and I try and stick with the big name contests that are well vetted (Nature's Best, National Geographic, etc.). Of course the downside to that is it greatly reduces chances of winning as the competition is very stiff. But yes, read the rules very closely

Of course, everyone is trying to make money and you have to pick and choose wisely, but http://artdeadline.com/ has a lot of listings, if you have the time and good fortune to go thru them.

Lucy,

try some local Photo Contests. Local galleries, fairs, museums, etc. - you should be able to find something near to where you live. Much more fun then the online contests.
