I would like to make some photo books of my daughter's wedding for our family.
Plus, I'd like to create a high quality (coffee table style) to send to others for Xmas gifts.....And, maybe as a "blueprint" for actually sending to a publisher for sale. It would also contain my daughter and Mother's original stories and poetry (both are incredible writers).

If you use Apple computers I would recommend the Apple books that can be made using iPhoto or Aperture. I have made several books using both programs and couldn't be happier. There are several "styles" available (more in Aperture than iphoto) and it is very easy to put together. The color match of the printed books to the original photos is perfect in my opinion.

Lucy, not sure how fancy you want to get or how much you want to spend, but Costco has a photo book making site, my wife used it twice for birthday books, came out very nice. I believe Costco uses a program called My Publisher, check their web site. If errors are found in the first copy of the book Costco will reprint until your satisfied. Good luck

I've used MyPublisher for two books based on my blog. Their reproduction (if you order with the higher quality paper) is very good. One caution: The preview in their down-loadable software is not an entirely accurate representation of the finished book. Be sure to also review it on-line after uploading your book before finalizing the order. I had some text clipping in my most recent book that didn't show in the creation software. To their credit though they did reprint the order without charge, including shipping. Their fabric covers are beautiful and their help system is great. I do wish they had a square format.
I have also used both MPIX & Blurb. I was mostly pleased with the results. MPIX's "suede" cover isn't very suede-like IMO but is alright. I didn't try the image bonded cover option. I got a softcover book made by Blurb and it is pretty good too. Blurb can work from a PFD file if you'd prefer to lay out your book using In-Design or similar publishing software.
If you go with MyPublisher watch their site for sales. Several times a year they will significantly mark down their prices by as much as 40-50%. Get the software, take your time making the book on your computer and wait for them to offer you a cut rate.
