Well, i destroyed a second tripod yesterday, my second in three years, so i am using this opportunity to lay off the photography for a while so that i can get my dishes washed etc
Besides, i doubt ill be able to top the conditions i lucked out with yesterday for a while. When i drove over La Veta yesterday noonish and the sun was shining while it simultaneously snowed like mad, i knew the conditons would be extraordinary for sunset. I was going to use the afternoon to shoot Zapata falls, but the road is closed for the winter due to campground building. So, i went to the Medano Ranch instead and i was glad i got there in plenty of time since there was much to shoot (except the Bison, which as usual ran away from me as soon as i got within half a mile of them...) Here's one from sunset as the snow squalls cleared off the dunes and the peaks lit up--it was incredible! Drive home--not so fun, as i hit the same snow squall that caused the huge wreck up north. Almost had to pull over cause i couldnt see the road... Anyhow, more at my website: http://www.stanroseimages.com/gallery/latest/

Holy crap Duneman Well worth the loss of a tripod...love all of 'em.
What a set, Stan! These are all awesome, but for me Finale III and Panorama II you hit way, way out of the park. And Finale I is not far behind those. With those in your Dunes portfolio, I'd say take some time off and just photograph the Colorado Gators.

The one you posted here is lovely. You must have felt somewhat blessed to have witnessed. this event.

WOW! Dunes Finale 1
What more could you add? You've got dramatic clouds at sunset with a moon.
Well, OK, you missed the lightning.

I think it's safe to say that the weather and light Gods were smiling down on you yesterday.

Woah, awesome! Dunes Finale III, Dunes Layers III, and Blue Evening are my faves. The light in Blue Evening is amazing, the way it shows and contrasts with the velvety colors of the dunes.

Oh my Gosh! Dunes Layers 2 and 3 are awesome and Blue Evening is AMAZING!!!!!!! I think htese are the best I've seen. How did you mess up your tripod?

Fantastic! Hard to pick a favorite, but Layers III with the popping dunes, and Finale I & III.
Maybe add some foreground to (or crop off the LL corner of foreground) in Finale IV.
If one has to sacrifice a tripod to Apollo and get this stormy light, K-Mart might have a run on their $19 cheapies.

Daayum! You certainly cleaned up on some extraordinary conditions!

Wish I was there for these kind of photography conditions, tripod loss or not. For driving conditions, however, not my idea of fun at all. This one, the massive cloud shot on ESS and "Dune Layers III," are my favorites. Fantastic!

NIce work, by the way I heard if you rub yourself down with buffalo dung they won't run away.

Really? Ill have to try that next time...especially if i get to eat what i can catch and kill
Doug--i used to own a K-mart tripod, it was the first one i owned actually when i had my Dig Rebel--then i moved up quickly from $19 to a $49 Slik, but the Kmart one wasnt half bad....
Jack: just months of prolonged abuse--using the tripod as a treking pole for example, it just gradually wore it down and it fell apart, and it's in such beat up condition its not worth repairing...
