We have made a few important updates to the Posting Guidelines. These updates include guidelines on commercial advertisement in the Rules of Conduct section and information on Personal Galleries in the NPN Special Galleries and Showcases section.
Please take a moment to review these updates!

So was the file size for 720 pixel images increased from 200 kb to 300 kb !?

Yes.

Why can we only link an image URL in an original post and not a reply? Seems to me like you would want to push people who have already uploaded a photo somewhere else to just be able to link the URL, regardless of if they originated the post or replying to one.

Koveh, in the IC galleries only the OP is allowed to repost a photo.
Many moons ago when we allowed anyone to post a photo in a reply, the Photoshop Jockeys loaded up threads with their renditions of the original photo and soon the threads became discussions about their reposted photos, not the original one. So now only the OP may repost a photo in a thread, with improvements based on suggestions made in the thread and the original still in place to show the differences. This is also the reason we do not allow the original photo to be deleted and replaced with another.
As long as the OP is the one reposting, we could certainly allow them to do so via linking to a photo on another site. But in all honesty, no one has requested this before.
We have outlined the rules of engagement for reposting photos in the Posting Guidelines. The goal is to help the OP with their photo and keep their thread focused on that.

As long as you are changing things, how about considering a way to accommodate
the popularity of panoramic pictures on this forum. I for one would be willing to pay increased dues to accommodate the added demand on pixel storage. 720 pixels
just doesn't cut it.

How about 1200 pixels? Does that cut it? You can post 'em that wide in an IC gallery (if you guys had one).

Jim, I appreciate the response. I am honestly shocked to hear that nobody has requested this yet. Although I understand your reasoning, I have to argue that the benefit of allowign this would far outweigh the cost. Personally I think the posting restrictions are far too restrictive on this site, and I have been on a lot of forums in my time. Given that and the fact that I can't post multiple images during my original post leads to a bunch of heart burn for me. I can't tell you the number of times someone has started a thread for a photo contest and I don't post a picture because it won't allow me to link my image. This is also why I no longer post my images on here if I have more than one, because I can link the first, but have to deal with uploading the others and with the restrictive upload rules I just get annoyed and give up, so now I post them on my own website and just link to that. Just my 2cents and I know I am probably ranting a bit here, but for a site we pay for I should not feel that restricted to post my images.

Koveh, I'm just asking this so I make sure I make sure I understand what you're saying.
In the IC galleries, you upload an initial photo in the original post and then have the ability to upload a photo in a reply. So if you post a photo, and then someone states that they think it would look better cropped, you can then upload the cropped version in a reply - as in this thread. There is no limit to the number of replies and revised photos you can upload in a single thread.
What other function are you suggesting? For a photo critique gallery, it seems we're providing all the function needed to critique a photo. Are you suggesting you should be able to upload multiple photos in a single post? If so, what purpose would that serve? Not trying to be contentious, just trying to understand what it is you are requesting.
I agree with being able to link to a photo URL in a reply - that is easy to do and we will do that!
Edit

OK, uploading mulitple photos for a contest. That would happen here, in this forum and not in an IC gallery (which is intended strictly for image critique/photo sharing).
In photo contests - such as those sponsored by NANPA - you send small files via email or upload for entry. Once the winners are selected (or down to the final selections), you usually have to send a larger file for the purpose of displaying the winning photos. So having file size limitations for initial entry is certainly not unique to NPN.
So you have the RMNP contest photos on your own website. Option 1 - if they meet the NPN posting guidelines, you can upload your photos, one in each reply. Option 2 - if they are too large and you do not feel like making smaller versions for uploading (like you would have to do to enter them in most other contests), you can link to them - as many as you want in a single post - using the url tags. Option 3 is to create a single page on your website displaying your contest entry photos (as large as you want to make them) and providing a single link to that page using the url tags.
Again, I agree with being able to link via URL function to a photo on your website and make it appear directly here. While you can link to a 10 megabyte file, the photo still needs to fit in the site's forum page layout - which means 720 pixels in width max.
Being able to upload and display photos in the discussion forums was a secondary consideration when we designed the forum software. The forum software is designed primarily for discussion, not necessarily being able to display large photo files. The options for doing so are outlined in the previous paragraph, so there are certainly a number of reasonable options if you want to do so.
The IC gallery sofware gives you the ability to upload a much larger file, but again the software is designed for photo critique, which usually means one photo at a time.
So perhaps we're discussing a function that is only used for a certain purpose, such as displaying a number of photos for entry in a contest. If I am correct in that assumption we could probably come up with something that would make that easier.
Thanks again for your feedback!

Jim, my only gripe was not being able to link a URL on a reply. If I look at my reply box right now, the only option I have is to upload the image from my hard drive. If I start a brand new post I have the options to upload or link from a URL. That was pretty much it, and it sounds like you are willing to look at that. If that is fixed, my gripes all go away. I just want to be able to link images from URL in all cases, regardless of if I started the original post or not. For instance, someone starts the sticky post at the top called "Fall Photo Contest" and everyone is to post their images. I want to be able to reply to the thread and link a URL rather than upload the actual file. Or I start a thread called "My recent trip to Zion" and want to post 3 images in total. Right now I can only do one image per reply, so the first post that started the thread I can link the URL from another site. Then I have to reply to my own thread and on the reply I only have the option to upload the image form my hard drive. Again, allowing me to either link multiple URL's on the original post that started the thread or allowing me to link a URL on the reply will solve this problem. Hope that makes sense and regardless of what happens, I appreciate you listening and taking down the concern. =)
