1D Mark III, EF500, tripod, hide - 1/640th sec, f/5.6, ISO 400, 500mm - processed in LR3.3RC, with a big crop and some minor saturation and tone changes.
I am looking forward to some avian winter visitors in my garden soon, now that I have got the feeding regime up and running. Sparrows are the main takers right now but their plumage looks really good at this time of year. I also get a couple of Stock Doves visiting - I rarely see photos of them; perhaps because they look so similar to Woodpigeons, people ignore them.

Nice wintery shot can just see a halo round the beak but yet the body of the bird doesn t look oversharpened
Nice, but the comp just isn't working for me... the bird is sitting a bit too low in the frame and maybe just a tad too central... Also, perhaps not helped by the compression, but I would like to see a little more detail in the whites and blacks of the plumage, not easy I know whilst maintaining a full tonal range.
I haven't noticed any halo effects when using lightroom... I am going to have to keep my eye open for them now...
Thanks for all the honest critical feedback everyone, it's really helpful. I would much sooner have some honest critique than a lot of unwarranted praise
I can't do anything about the bottom edge on this occasion other than crop in elsewhere a little to rebalance. However, here's a rework that attempts to bring a smidge more detail out on the white cheek. Despite not being blown, part of that area is smoothed out, possibly as a result of the direction of the ambient light.
For those of you who are now worried about halos in Lightroom (:)), try playing with the Detail slider on the Detail panel in Develop and you will see what I mean. FYI, I use LR for capture and output sharpening - you may be able to control this better than me if you use PS or something else for your final output.
