I just did a long day in the central valley looking for Sandhill Cranes and other birds. I went to Staten Island Road, Consumnes River Reserve, and Woodbridge Road. The Cranes were out and plentiful although they won't let you get too close. Definitely bring your longest lens. I have posted bird lists, information on visiting these areas and some photos at http://naturalhistorywanderings.com/2010/11/27/birding-consumnes-woodbridge-rd-and-the-delta/
Thanks, Sandy -
The Sacramento NWF is also full thousands of various ducks, geese, swans, and cranes, for those interested.
At some places, the cranes are within 50 feet if you move quietly.
