I live in the "Thumb." Aside from the obvious Lake Huron stuff, what areas have promise for winter shooting. I would like to see something with open, moving water, and snow covered trees. The main rivers nearby are too wide to really compose within a frame.
Any favorite shooting locations?

The Grand River in this area usually has some open water, specifically from GH to Eastmanville. You might be able to find some spots around Grand Rapids too, where the river runs next to US 131.. Just north of downtown (between I-96 and Ann Street) there is a park on the east side of the Grand River that has trees. Other possible places might be Manistee or the Muskegon River.

I forgot about Pigeon Creek Park, which is about halfway between Holland and Grand Haven. It's fairly new and yes, Pigeon Creek runs through it, with trees on both sides....with a nature trail on the north side of the water. Not sure if it freezes up totally in the winter time or not, though. The creek widens, then goes out into Lake Michigan at Port Sheldon.
