White Canyon, Utah that is.

White Canyon is a deep, narrow canyon that originates in the foothills of the Abajo Mountains and passes through Natural Bridges Nat'l. Mon. before draining into Lake Powell. It drains quite a large part of the Colorado Plateau along it's course. If you've ever driven along Hwy. 95 from Nat'l. Bridges to Lake Powell, then you probably saw White Canyon out your window during most of the drive.
White Canyon has an abundance of Anasazi cliff dwellings and slot canyons (e.g the 'Black Hole') that are off the beaten trail. I've always dreamed of backpacking it from one end to the other, but until then, I'm happy enough to just drop in on different sections to pay a short visit.

A few images from Saturday's 4 mile hike--

'Gossip Quarters'

A unique ruin that deserves a far better title than the one that I just made up.
Any volunteers?

Great detail in the ruins and I really like those hands. Really gives a sense of history!

'Ice Nebula'

John,

That last one is stunning! What a perfect title too! Great series!

The last one is sweet, print it big!

These are all very nice, but Wall Abstract stands out to me. So much visual interest in that one! Looks like you had a very productive hike.

Wow John, that wall abstract shot is stunning, perfect light, comp etc-that one is really speaking to me as well as the ice nebula. Do you know how they would go about making these hand prints? Strange how some are silhouettes like someone painted around the hand, then there are a couple next to it that are as if someone dipped their hands in paint like making a turkey back in kindergarten? Any insight if you got it is appreciated, but great original work :toast:

I love #3! It conveys a "creepy" repeat human profile feel. All of them are beautiful.
Posted by John Mumaw on November 28, 2010 at 9:01 PM
Thanks, folks!

Jared,
Those hand 'negative' pictographs are thought to be created by the people holding their hands on the rock and then blowing plant dyes through a straw of sorts over and around their hands.

Excellent work on all the images John! Wall Abstract is my 2nd favorite and the Ice Nebula is outstanding, I like the inclusion of the leaf in the LRC.

That ice nebula is bizarre...it doesnt look like a photo. Very interesting. I have seen the handprints before in NB. I really like your composition and would suggest a black and white conversion. Neat stuff! Joe,

Very unique set of images. The Ice Nebula is a very creative image. The colors are fantastic and the leaf just adds to the total image.

John, Your images are always unique and so well done....I can count on you to show us a world that most of us would never get a glimpse of otherwise. Thanks,
Joe Rogers

I see a lot of face profiles in #3, but you definitely saved the best for last. Wow!!!
Posted by Jeremy Kessler on November 29, 2010 at 12:40 AM
These are all great, but I've got to agree with everyone on that last one, stunning!
Posted by Stan Rose on November 29, 2010 at 7:30 AM
Great stuff John! I was really lovin the wall abstract--then i saw the ice shot--Infrigginincredible!!
Posted by Howard Cihak on November 29, 2010 at 8:50 AM
John, what everyone else said. The Ice Nebula is in a class by itself. As for the Wall Abstract, is that Anasazi art (if so, that says something remarkable about the artist) or it desert varnish?

I was pretty darn impressed by the first three, then the last one made me bow down and worship you as a photo god! :jump:

Very inspiring images.

John, I find the wall abstract the most visually interesting of the first four with its jagged edges and branching stain. Along the bottom middle edge of the photo, the rock edge/crack is barely cut off. Do not know if adding that very tiny bit would help.

Then you have the mind-blowing nebula. Very intriguing. :toast:

Last one is very cool! What is that stuff in the center?
Posted by Jimmy Gekas on November 29, 2010 at 12:19 PM
Dude.... Ice Nebula is amazing. :toast:

I just walked in the door from a week with my folks in AZ so I hadn't seen these. Stunning work John! The second and third images are really fabulous as well as the final images!!!!!! I love the abstract quality to each of these. These are so much more than a documentary image. #2 and #3 especially would look great in a house. Beautiful stuff John!!!

Awesome collection John. You sure have found some amazing sights in southern Utah!
Posted by Roger Rouch on November 29, 2010 at 7:33 PM
John, I really enjoyed seeing these. They are great. I am partial to the second and third, but the last is just wild and neat. I've dabbled hiking a few sections of the White Canyon and these are an inspiration to go back.

Cool shots, love the Ice Nebula! White Canyon is high on my list of Cedar Mesa places to explore. I've seen some of the roads off of hwy 95 but I'm not too familiar with the accesses to it. I'll have to meet up with you for a jaunt sometime.
Posted by Pam Colander on November 29, 2010 at 11:09 PM
OK, are you John MUMAW or LOGAN ?!? Saw your Ice Nebula on FB and thought that guy took Mumaw's photo! What's the deal?
Posted by Bret Edge on November 29, 2010 at 11:10 PM
I am so totally tripped out by "Wall Abstract". I love it. LOVE IT! Really unique and beautiful. Might have to order a print some time soon if I can figure out where to hang it.

This seems like a phenomenal canyon, John. I'd like to explore it some time. Backpacking the length of Dark Canyon from the Blues to Powell is high on my list, too. So many places to get lost...
Posted by John Mumaw on November 29, 2010 at 11:23 PM
Thanks a lot, folks! Looks like I'll be making a print of 'Ice Nebula' for myself soon.

Pam,
I used my middle name when I signed up at FB 'cause I wasn't sure how trustworthy the place was. Too late to change back now...
I think those are air bubbles in the center. I didn't want to walk out on that ice to look too closely.

Doug,
I can see what you're referring to, but that bottom crack was quite unappealing.

Hey Howard,
Yep, that's desert varnish alright. Unlike any other I've seen, too.

Thanks again!!

I think "Gossip Quarters" is a great name for the first one, John. This is an incredible series of images. I don't have a favorite, but I'm totally fascinated by signs of ancient people, so I'd prefer to have "Idle Hands" on my wall.

John, sorry I am replying so late, but been off line for a few weeks and busy at work. Excellent stuff you have here! My favorite is the wall abstract...however, all of them are outstanding! Also, I have seen a lot of ice shots, but that one is at the top!

Clicked on EarthShots photo of the day and saw Ice Nebula.
Congrats to ya John.

Amazing series, the ice shot is superb!
