Hey all,

I am planning on road tripping from Eastern Iowa to Bosque Del Apache, NM. I don't really want to make the 21 some hour trip in a day and was hoping you folks could offer some suggestions on places to stop along the way. I am interested in any spots for birds, mammals, or scenery. I was kind of hoping I could get some shots of deer, sheep, or coyotes along the way but I always love waterfowl and any other birds. Thank you for any help!

If you're willing to make a detour to northwest Arkansas, you ought to be able to catch the elk herds in Boxley Valley. Michael Dougherty's web site has up to date information on the goings on there.

Hey Ryan, Just south of Amarillo is Palo Duro Canyon. You might want to check it out.

Some photography possibilities:

As Merle said, Palo Duro Canyon near Amarillo is kinda neat place to stop and if you are a camper, to stay too. Just west of Amarillo is the Cadillac Ranch (about the Arnot exit off I-40 west of town), which while not really nature, is worth a stop. As is the Big Texan in Amarillo (for pure tourist cheesiness (and an ok steak too). Its east of downtown. Cant miss it.

In New Mexico between Tucumcari and Santa Rosa is the Cuervo ghost town which is neat enough to stop too.

Have a great trip!!!

It looks like you could be going right through the heart of the Flint Hills in Kansas. This was taken at the Konza Prairie near Manhattan KS in Feb. I'm sure there are others here that could give you a lot better details about the Flint Hills though than me.

In southwest Kansas you could be going near to a couple of my favorite locations for scenery. I've never gone there in winter but would like to some time. Here are some places to start for: the Flint Hills, Clark State Lake, Big Basin, and
Cimarron National Grasslands.

Hope you have a great trip.

I'm with Ken on his recommendations Ryan. If you could spend some time in the Flint Hills I believe it would be well worth it. Here's some more info; Tallgrass National Preserve, Konza Prairie, 8 wonders of Kansas/.

Have fun I envy your trip to Bosque Del Apache.
