Figures...I don't have any time to shoot for months, and now when I have a trip where I actually may have time to go birding and shoot, my camera is acting up.
Think I know the answer, that I'll have to send it in, but thought I'd check. Canon 50D...there's a delay after auto-focus, before the shutter actually activates. I'll press the button for focus, it will lock focus (beeps), but when pressing all the way, there's a delay before the shot actually happens. It's not refocusing or anything, there's just a delay. Really weird too, since sometimes it's almost normal (but not quite), and other times, it will lock focus, and then the shutter actually won't activate for another 3-4 seconds!
Something with the button itself? I put in my shutter release cable, and it focuses and shoots instantly. So, only an issue when pressing the shutter button.
ARGH!!! Figures, right when I actually might be able to get out and USE the damn thing!!!

Thanks Charlie! Think I may try #3 there, the youtube video...although I think I'm a little scared to be pouring a liquid inside my camera body!!

Amazingly enough...it worked! Option #3 in Charlie's response worked, that is. I took the battery out of my 50D, tilted it downward in that direction, squirted a bit of isopropyl alcohol in, pressed the shutter button many times while the alcohol ran through, and let it dry. Tried it this morning, and the shutter delay problems appear to be gone!
Not sure if this is a permanent fix, and if there were something gumming up the shutter button, or if it's temporary, but it sure beats what Canon said was a $200+ fix.

I'm glad you solved this inconvenient issue and look forward to seeing you here on Sunday.
